Description of Study
Although many crafts in premodern Europe depended on a pool of migratory journeymen, very little is known about these workers, or about how craft guilds and urban authorities affected their movement and settlement. This papers employs novel data on thousands of migrant journeymen in three cities of Holland. By comparing different crafts and cities we provide the first systematic overview of journeymen migration and settlement patterns in The Dutch Republic. We find that migration and settlement patterns differed significantly by occupational sector, marital status, and skill level. More importantly, the stance of urban authorities towards migrants, as reflected by its decrees, significantly affected settlement patterns, potentially explaining why many migrant journeymen opted for Amsterdam and The Hague but few for Haarlem. This suggests that urban regulation goes a long way in explaining the choice of destination for skilled labourers.
Study research question
